The rite to die

Euthanasia is the Good Dead. Dying peacefully and with grace. It’s invented by the classic Greek. Some might think the -asia part refers to some Zen-Yoga-Mediation technique, but even though it might appear the euthanised are in a state of otherworldly bliss, they are dead. Deceased. Gone. Blown to peaces, most of the time.

The act of euthanasia was made somewhat legal in Holland at the end of the 20th century. Of course, it was the best solution in a country where suicide still is illegal, and the suicidal person can involve others in his decision, just according the poldermodel. Euthanasia clinics were the hit of early 21st century Holland, drawing lots of death tourist to the clean houses of death. Only few returned to their home country.

Soon, the government decided to get “Euthanasia Tax”. Those who wanted to die in the euthanasia clinics had to pay taxed. Originally, it was an alternative for Tourist Taxes, to make up for the money that the dead didn’t spend on cultural highlights such as the Amsterdam Red Light District, the Zaansche Schans, the Keukenhof and the colourful tulip fields (that now hid a cemetery of euthanised tourists).

Then doctors shied away from the clinics, performing illegal euthanasia because they didn’t pay taxed for it. People who were euthanised, got on their record “murdered”, “drowned”, “overdosed”, and even an occasional “bored to death”, just to avoid euthanasia tax.
After the flood, FIOD used to investigate each dead as a victim of tax-evasion efforts. Soon, all kind of dying became legal euthanasia. All people who died, or rather, their heirs, had to pay the feared tax. The streets were flocked with “living dead”, those who should have been dead but could not afford euthanasia taxes.
In this grim climate, illegal euthanisors did their job. They roamed the cities at night, usually guided my a medic. They visited their patients, let the family say goodbye and then simple kill off the patient. No taxes were involved. It was a relief for the poor, common people. However, being a euthanisors became a dangerous job, and the “angels of dead” were pursuited by the FIOD whenever they dared to step outside the darkness.

Current euthanasia rate is € 10,- per year lived. Rates can change per city. Those who have lived unhealty, get a penalty.
