Son of Aether

Creative steampunk style... here is how I did it, starting from the top:

The top hat I’ve bought in a theatre- and party store. It was not that cheap (20 or 25 € ), but looking close it’s a fake. Theatre is the art of illusion. The blue ribbon surrounding it is a bit of left over curtain I used. It has a decent design of “Fleur de Lis”. The blue ribbon is attached to the hat so it can’t really move. The blue ribbon is decorated with a (brass?) “medallion”, showing a mythical bird. I found it on the streets of Seville...

The round mirror shades I got for free when buying a set of Nubian sun milk and after sun milk in Slovakia. Oh well, I confess... I bought the sun milk in order to get the shades...

The laboratory coat I’ve got for so long I forgot where I bought it. It’s not a laboratory coat at all, but there is a short story that goes with it:
I had this coat back in 1989, when I went to university. I sat in the Aula and next to me, some guy asked me “Do you study chemics?”
I said “No, why?”
“The coat,” he said, and pointed to this very coat. And indeed, across the room the chemics students sat in white lab coats, and the guys next to me - studying flight technology- burst out in singing some odd song humiliating the chemics guys.
So I think the coat can pass for a lab coat after all.
The other option was to use a blue dust coat which I got from my father, who worked in it for years. But that one was a bit too tight to use in the astonishing heat of 25 degrees Celcius.

The blue tie is not a tie but a silk scarf. I do have ties, bow-ties and scarfs and stuff like that, but the blue fitted nice with the other blue stuff. I bought it on a Middle Age market from Kramer Zunft und Kurzweyl

The waistcoat comes from an old Christmas collection of C&A. It looks a bit like stylish fabric. It came with a shirt and the ensemble did cost no more than 25 €. Christmas collections might have some useful garments for a gentleman.

The watch-on-a-chain in the pocket of the waistcoat is bought by the Kijkshop. It’s new and functions well. I paid about 20 € for it. You can get such watches in several stores, vintage, antique or brand new.

The belt is bought at Levi’s. Don’t know how much I paid for it... I didn’t buy it especially for this outfit either. Hanging from the belt I have two leather pouches I bought at Middle Ages markets. They are decoration and contain nothing. I also have a small drinking horn hanging from the belt, bought at the same market.

The white shirt comes from a Middle Age market as well and was rather expensive. It’s made of pure linen, and a bit warm in summer. Even though it is mediaeval, the design is so basic I was sure it could fit in the nineteenth century fantasy as well.

The black trousers are from Dockers. They have no special features but being plain and non-distracting. And they fit fine. 89 €.

The shoes are very pointy and alternative. I got them from Sacha’s. The other choice would have been Doc Marten’s boots, but I assumed I wouldn’t be the only one wearing Doc Marten’s and I was right about that. 60 €.

I carry a small bag, containing a monocular. The bag I made out of left over curtain, like the blue ribbon on the hat. It’s decorated with cheap Christmas decorations in Arabic style (blue glass beads) and the silver/blue strap over my shoulder is bought for the occasion. The monocular is a retro/pirate-style one from Tasco, made of fake leather and brass.

In the backpack I had with me (not in style but I had nothing else to take along to carry things in), I had an Absinthe bottle filled with green coloured lemonade to finish this creation.

I forgot to take along a black umbrella.

On a fair in October, I had a more gothic outfit. The hat was without blue ribbon and decoration, I had a normal black tie instead of the blue scarf, a normal white shirt instead of the mediaeval one, and nothing hanging from the belt. Instead of the lab coat I wore a long black woollen coat.
Besides that I had parts of my hair dyed silver, and I did have the umbrella.
