Mapping the pm trip to Europe

Thursday 28 September 2006 05:19

While I was going to the other side of the Atlantic anyway I figured it would also be nice to visit New York City, since that's about in the same neighbourhood of the global village. And Montreal seemed a nice destination to fly to from Amsterdam so the route was: fly from Amsterdam to Montreal on 9/11, train to New York, train back to Montreal, train to Halifax, fly to Saint Pierre, fly to Montreal, fly to Amsterdam. But only after noticing the plane had to refuel somewhere between Saint Pierre and Montreal I dared to consult Google Earth to find out how this would map to the European neighbourhood of the global village: It's like someone from around Montreal would like to visit the Faroe Islands, flies to Amsterdam and visits Berlin since that's in the same area. In that comparison Amsterdam - Berlin isn't that odd, it's just that Amtrak takes about 10 hours to cover such a distance, and European trains take about half of that time. But what I didn't realize was that the Faroe Islands were that close to Amsterdam...
