Sunny Weert

Yesterday was an excellent day to stay in the train a bit longer and end up in Weert (18:06 Amstel - 19:46 Weert). While the north of the Netherlands was covered by clouds and lacked sun, south of the big rivers the sun was shining. I wasn't going to 's Hertogenbosch this time, but was curious about 2 stops further south: Weert, after Eindhoven. I always had the impression that it was some dull village in the middle of nowhere (like worse than Eindhoven ;-), but the Intercity train stops at Weert station so there should be some city centre with a MacDonalds and stuff. And there was to my surprise! They were fixing the church a bit so that made it a bit less idyllic, but it starts of with a very nice authentic station - likely from the same time as Haarlem station, when there was still a reason to have trains stop in places like Weert and Haarlem - and in 10 minutes you walk via a inviting straight line to the centre of Weert, with plenty of places to eat and drink. On monday the sushibar was closed, but there is one. The best part of Weert is that there is an old-style cosy square next to the church, and for modern day shopping they have a more modern square a few streets away. So Weert isn't bad at all. Just the name is not as inviting as Stramproy, Maaseik, Maarheeze and Someren of all places.
